Festival Opening

When: 06.11.2019 19.30 Uhr

Where: VHS Forum im Rautenstrauch Joost Museum

Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o advocates the promotion of African languages and Felwine Sarr appeals to Africans to "ensure the audibility and comprehensibility of their own voices". Keeping this in mind, the Cologne literature project stimmen afrikas has been paying tribute to the beauty and polyphony of African narrative art for ten years. Many of our guests inspire readers all over the world and open new worlds for us - thanks to the successful transfer of translators. At the CROSSING BORDERS festival, we want to raise awareness of this meaningful act of translation and explore and enjoy it in all its dimensions. In addition to literary experiences, you are invited to get to know a handful of Africa's over 2000 languages.

First, we would like to welcome you - together with our guest curator Bibi Bakare-Yusuf (NG/ GB) - and are looking forward to the keynote of the distinguished and award-winning publisher from Nigeria. You will also be welcomed by the two patrons, the Cologne author Navid Kermani and the actress Dennenesch Zoudé, who share our concern for cultural mediation. Helène Batemona-Abeke, representing the African communities of Cologne, and the musician Melchi VE with his incomparable songs and sounds from Cameroon will also be there. You can also look forward to the wonderful poetry of Susan N.Kiguli and Ndèye Codou Fall, as well as the charming moderation of Azizè Flittner and Rémi Armand Tchokothe.
